Tailgating Basic Info
Wear team colors: Sport a team jersey or sweatshirt, or at the very least, pick out an outfit in your team’s colors.
Color-coordinate plates/napkins: Purchase your plates, napkins and cups in team colors to show your team spirit.
Plan your menu: Do this several days before the game. Keep it simple and be sure to let other people know what they can bring. Do some prep work in advance. For example, if you’re having burgers, slice your lettuce and tomatoes the evening before.
Make a stock list: Create a list of the items you need to take with you so you don’t forget anything. Pack your paper products and condiments the day before. Don’t forget trashbags, water, first aid kit and damp towels in Ziplock bags (your guests will appreciate something to wipe their hands on.).
Arrive at least three hours early: Set up takes awhile, so you want to get there in time to do it right. Plus, the earlier you are, the better place you’ll have to park. Consider setting up at the end of the parking row for more room or next to a grassy area.
Decorate your tailgate: Add team pennants, signs or flags so your guests can find you (and to make it more fun!).
Clean up: Think about those around and leave your tailgating site cleaner than you found it.
Be sure to plan for your eating time. Your food should be ready at least an hour before game time. This gives everyone time to eat, clean up and close down the grill.
Be a good tailgating neighbor. Share food and stories with your new “teammates.”
Lastly, here’s a list of some items that you won’t always need, but you’ll find they’ll come in handy at just the right time.
- Jumper cables
- Toilet paper
- Paper towels
- Trash bags for clean-up
- Trash bags for recycling
- Extra ice
