Tips for a Healthy Hot Tub

Tips for a Healthy Hot Tub

The key to a happy hot tub owner is a spa that’s hot and ready to use when you are!

When you have a hot tub, you want to make sure the water is healthy for soaking and ready to use when you are. Check out these important tips for a clean, healthy hot tub for everyday soaking.

Drain and Refill Your Hot Tub

Your Hot Spring hot tub is great at keeping itself clean. Whether you use a chlorine, bromine, ozone, or salt water system to purify your spa, you enjoy pristine water, free of contamination, for months on end.

Yet, with every system, you’ll need to change the spa water now and then.

  • If you use a traditional chlorine or bromine system, you should change the water in your spa about every three to four months.
  • If you use the FreshWater® Salt Water System, you’ll need to change the water in your hot tub less often – just once a year.

If you want to do it yourself, follow our step-by-step instructions. We can also help you with this – just contact us through the chat on this page!

Use Spa Purge

Spa PurgeNatural Chemistry’s Spa Purge attacks the root cause of most spa maintenance problems.

The buildup of non-living organic waste contamination causes most water issues. Oils, lotions, cosmetics, hair products, and other non-living organics build up in your spa water to produce cloudiness, unpleasant odors, and even foaming. These contaminants collect and build up in spas, circulation systems, and filters.

When you “purge” your spa plumbing, you can improve water clarity and reduce the amount of time and effort needed to maintain your spa.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Remove cartridge filter elements.
  2. With the spa water temperature at 95ºF or higher and circulation running, add the entire contents of the bottle to the spa water.
  3. Run jets for a minimum of five minutes.  Note: If foaming becomes excessive, turn the jets off. Some foaming is expected during the purge process.
  4. Maintain water temperature at 95ºF and allow the spa to circulate overnight with jets off.
  5. Drain and rinse/clean out the spa surfaces. Refill the spa water and reinstall the filter elements.
  6. Proceed with regular spa maintenance.

Clean Your Filters

Cleaning your spa’s filters is even easier than cleaning the shell and should be done monthly.

  • Remove the cover to the filter compartment.
  • Remove any floating items from the compartment.
  • Turn the filter retainer handle to unlock the filter and retainer.
  • Remove the filter cartridge and retainer.
  • Soak your filter in a degreaser, such as FRESHWATER® spa filter cleaner, according to package instructions.
  • Rinse the filter clean with a garden hose, spraying from all angles to ensure you’ve washed away all debris.
  • Replace the filter and lock the handle. Do not over-tighten.
