What You Need to Know Before Buying an Above Ground Pool

What You Need to Know Before Buying an Above Ground Pool

Thinking about adding an above ground pool to your backyard? It’s a great choice if space and budget are a concern.

Above ground pools are a fun, flexible, and affordable way to bring resort-style relaxation to your own outdoor space, without the big investment of an inground pool.

We’ve put together a checklist for you that includes what you need to know before buying an above ground pool.

At Fiesta Pools and Spas, we want you to feel confident and well-prepared before making your purchase. From yard space to base prep and electrical needs, here’s what you need to know.

Measure Your Space Carefully

Not all backyards are created equal, and not all above ground pools are either.

Before you fall in love with a particular shape or size, take time to measure your available space. Remember, you’ll need more room than just the pool’s footprint. Allow for:

  • Clearance around the pool (typically 2–3 feet on all sides)
  • Room for a ladder, steps, or deck
  • Space for accessories like pumps or filters

Pro Tip:

Avoid placing your pool under trees or near large shrubs. Debris from overhead branches can fall into the water, making maintenance harder.

Not sure where to start? Our team at Fiesta Pools and Spas offers complimentary backyard consultations to help you select the ideal size and layout for your space.

Understand Base Preparation

Above ground pools may not require excavation, but site preparation is still critical for a successful installation.

Here’s what you need to know about prepping the base:

  • Level ground is a must. Even a few inches of slope can cause major issues once the pool is filled. (If you have a slope, a semi-inground pool may be just what you need.)
  • You’ll need to remove grass, rocks, roots, and debris from the installation area.
  • A compacted sand or crusher dust base is usually recommended beneath the pool liner or frame.
  • Some homeowners choose to pour a concrete pad, especially for larger or semi-permanent pools.

At Fiesta, we set you up with professional installation services, including base prep, so you can rest easy knowing your pool is safe, level, and long-lasting. We can discuss this more in person or by phone.

What You Need to Know Before Buying an Above Ground Pool

Don’t Overlook Electrical Requirements

An above ground pool may seem plug-and-play, but you’ll likely need a dedicated electrical circuit, especially for the pump and filter system.

Here are a few electrical points to keep in mind:

  • Pumps and filters require a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet.
  • Depending on your setup, you might need 120V or 240V power.
  • Extension cords are not recommended. Professional wiring is safest and most efficient.

If you plan to add accessories such as lighting, heaters, or saltwater systems, these may require additional electrical access.

We always recommend consulting a licensed electrician or using Fiesta’s trusted installer partners to ensure your electrical setup meets local codes and safety standards.

Consider Local Regulations and Permits

Before installing your pool, check with your city or county to learn about:

  • Permit requirements
  • Setback rules from fences, property lines, or buildings
  • Fence or barrier regulations for safety compliance

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry. We’ve worked with municipalities all across the Tulsa area and can help guide you through the process.

Think Long-Term: Maintenance & Upgrades

Above ground pools are easier to maintain than inground ones, but they still need regular care.

You’ll need:

  • A pool pump and filter (usually included in your pool package)
  • Water test strips or digital testers
  • Chemicals for chlorine, pH balance, and algae prevention
  • A vacuum or cleaning system
  • You may also want to budget for future upgrades like a solar cover, LED lighting, or a wraparound deck.

Need help choosing supplies? Our retail team at Fiesta Pools and Spas can walk you through everything you need to keep your pool sparkling clean all season long.
